Going for five nights at the end of May.

Any tips?

I'll bring back a kebab for the person who gives the most helpful advice.

Still not allowed to go there with work, too unsafe.
Don’t read the list of terror incidents in instanbul, it’ll put you right off.

I know!...the fish made it. Might be a temporary thing?...was like it in April.

You noticed the smell straight away, but by the time you get to that head of Medusa column bit, it stank like you were in the middle of a rubbish tip in high summer.

Re: Istanbul
Exeter- jeez hadn’t heard that, was an incredible place. Impressive architecture but also weird with all the fish down there and the light and shadows on the pools.

Re: Istanbul
Green Street - The Basilica Cistern...for some reason all the water has now gone and obviously the fish with it - lost a lot of the effect and it also now stinks to the point of wanting to nick one of those face masks off the nearest Japanese tourist...

Re: Istanbul
Thought of some other good places to eat, would recommend these if you are near any of them...

Meshur Filibe Kofte - Serkeci (not far from the main train station there)

Antiochia
Babel

Both in Beyoglu

If you want to get away from the crowds for a day of it, Balat and Fener are worth wandering round, ditto some of the places up on the Bosphorus - you can get to most of them on a ferry from Eminonu

Darby - Sure, Istanbul def first on the list.

Anyone got an opinion on Warsaw? I'm gonna be going to East Europe next summer and want to take in a few cities..

Re: Istanbul
Apart from the Parthenon, Athens is really quite shit. Istanbul is at least ten times the city Athens is.

Re: Istanbul
AnotherDay, Istanbul is great. Much better than boring old Athens. Don’t hurry there, though, the country will be a lot happier place after they get rid of that shitbird Erdogan.

Istanbul and Athens is on my to do list at some point, but want to do more of Eastern Europe first. A great area to visit.

Best kebab I have ever eaten - Durum Zade -

It's worth looking for if you are in Beyoglu

Favourite site for me is the Aya Sofia - like others have said though you'll need to queue quite a while to get into the top 4 or 5 tourist attractions and with the Topkapi Palace need 2 hours or so at least to get around it all.

With the Aya Sofia - personally when I visit it now I have headphones and music on and just wander around the place taking it in, rather than following the crowds and the guides etc looking at it all consecutively.

If you go to the Asian side of the city Kadikoy is decent for bars - out of the ferry, cross the road, head up and right through the market there.

Loads of bars in Beyoglu - Nevizade St most liveliest.

Transport is brilliant - get an Istanbul card and you can get around on bus, metro, ferry for peanuts and rarely have to wait more than a few minutes for connections.

Galata tower is worth going up - amazing sights from the top.

Bosphorus boat trip is a lot better than the Golden Horn ones..

Re: Istanbul
Amazing city, beautiful location on the water and seems to spread out further even than London. Loved it when I went, but this is a few years ago, and Turkish friends tell me Erdogan has completely ruined a lot of the chilled everyday vibe it had.

Stayed in Beyoglu/Pera and went out around Istiklal mostly, lots of nice bars and a few clubs. One we went in was about four floors, different kinds of music and DJs on each floor, rooftop garden.

The Basilica Cistern was a must see, as are Agia Sophia etc. if you don't mind a queue. Best kebabs and ayran was on the right top of Istiklal coming into Taksim square. The ferry across from Besiktas to the Asian side is great too.
